APOCRYPHAL Lorca
Below are two chapters from the book Apocryphal Lorca by Jonathan Mayhew. Although this book focuses on Lorca's poetry, it is one of the most in-depth examinations of the problems that have arisen with English translations of Lorca's work. The first chapter is about Lorca and the writer, and the attempts that have been made to concoct a singular idea of who Lorca was, and the second chapter analyzes some of the most influential translations of Lorca's poetry from the 50s and 60s (since these were the translations that first brought Lorca to the US). These chapters will be a useful jumping off point for our translator in considering how to begin a balanced, tactful translation of this play. I have also included Mayhew's short preface for the sake of context.
The chapters can be downloaded as a PDF below.
